Precise Storage Space Detection in Automated Warehouse Systems

Cover

The Task

Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) are essential to today’s high-efficiency intralogistics operations. They enable fast, organized storage and retrieval while maximizing the use of available space. Goods are stored in containers or bins within compact compartments to streamline logistics and increase throughput.
To ensure smooth and error-free operation, these systems depend on accurate compartment positioning and reliable occupancy monitoring. Without proper detection, collisions and storage errors can occur. That’s why a robust optical sensor is needed to determine whether a compartment is empty, partially filled, or fully occupied, helping maintain a safe and efficient material flow.

The Challenge

The sensor must integrate seamlessly into the warehouse’s automated workflows—without interfering with motion paths or mechanical operations. It also must be able to detect items with varied colors, materials, and surface properties.
Additionally, the sensor must perform reliably even with reflective backgrounds, such as shiny metal shelving or signal lights, which can typically disrupt conventional sensors. To meet system requirements, the solution must also offer a detection range of over 1 meter and deliver depth assessment capabilities for greater flexibility.

Our Solution

The FT 25-RLAP time-of-flight sensor is purpose-built to meet these demands. It offers precise distance measurement up to 1.5 meters, regardless of an object’s color, shape, or surface finish. Its advanced time-of-flight technology ensures consistent, reliable performance even in challenging warehouse environments.
The FT 25-RLAP supports both analog (1–10 V) and digital IO-Link outputs, along with a configurable switching output. These flexible output options make it easy to adapt the sensor to a wide range of tasks—from distance monitoring and object detection to zone control.
With its ultra-compact housing (34 × 20 × 12 mm), the sensor fits easily into tight spaces, making it an ideal choice for high-density automated systems.
