Application example
In assembly processes, inspections must reliably check whether small parts such as seals, washers or spacer rings are completely present and correctly positioned. Missing or incorrectly positioned parts lead to malfunctions or costly rejects and must therefore be detected at an early stage before the next process step is enabled.
The small parts to be tested often have very small dimensions and often produce only minimal height differences. In addition, differing surfaces (metallic, matt, coated), limited installation space and defined working distances make reliable detection difficult. This causes conventional sensors with background suppression to quickly reach their limits, as they cannot resolve these fine differences reliably.
An optical distance sensor, such as the DTECT® Distance FT 55-RLAM, measures the exact height of the mounting position and detects the change in height caused by the inserted small part. Even very small differences – such as the thickness of a washer or seal – are detected precisely and reproducibly. The measured value can be transferred directly to the control system in order to reliably assess the presence and completeness of the component and to enable or stop the process.
