Precise handling of large components with robots and VISOR®

Titelbild

The Task

In the automotive industry, it is often necessary to automate the movement of large objects, such as sheet metal, for car body construction. The precise detection of the X and Y position of the component using a vision sensor is critical to ensure a precise gripping process for the robot.

The Challenge

Even slight angular deviations can cause significant positional errors in large objects making it crucial to detect them with extreme precision.
The components being handled are typically large, stackable, and often have shiny, reflective surfaces. To achieve the necessary precision, integrating the camera directly into the robot gripper is beneficial. However, this exposes the camera to high mechanical stress. To prevent collisions, a 100% detection rate is essential.

Our solution

The VISOR® Robotic enables precise position determination of large components, including their x/y coordinates and orientation, and transmits this information to the control system in robot coordinates. The vision camera captures the position of stacked objects as well as the distance between them. Thanks to its compact and robust design, the 2D camera can be easily integrated directly into the robot gripper. Standardized calibration plates allow for the automated calibration of both the robot and the camera. To ensure proper illumination across different distances and part positions, an additional ring light is used. Additionally, a distance sensor accurately measures the working distance, particularly when components are stacked.

Your advantages

  • High resolution and accuracy with 2 x VISOR® V20 enable operation at close working distances, without requiring the entire object to be visible in a single image capture.
  • The fully automatable hand-eye calibration provides real X/Y and angle information, without complex recalculations in the robot control system.
  • With its high computing performance in a compact design, the VISOR® hardware is perfectly suited for use directly on the robot gripper
  • Reduced cabling effort thanks to e.g. AIDA-compliant, robot-compatible push-pull cables.
  • The VISOR® software offers various functions for component position determination.
  • Easy integration with leading robotics systems featuring functions such as:
    • Automated calibration to the robot coordinate system
    • Automated validation of the position data
    • Standardized coordinate transmission
