Reliable Differentiation of Gears

The Task

In automated gearbox production, various types of gears are used. Since the supplier does not package them by type, the gears must be differentiated when picked up by the robot.

The Challenge

The gears appear visually identical—differing only by tooth count (26 vs. 27). Accurate detection is further complicated by the uneven backgrounds of the trays in which they are placed.
