The Task
When removing components from a machine using a double gripper, light sensors are needed to reliably signal part presence to the robot. During gripping, the sensor must confirm that the object is positioned correctly. After release, it must also verify that the gripper is completely empty—preventing a part from sticking and causing a collision on the next cycle. This requires two switching points: one to check correct part positioning in the gripper and one to confirm the gripper is empty before the next pick.
The Challenge
The sensor must be extremely small to fit within the double gripper’s limited space. The parts being handled are dark and shiny, which makes detection more difficult. The solution also needs to ensure that the “gripper empty” signal is only triggered once the part has fully left the gripper, preventing premature signals that could lead to collisions or damage.
