Positioning of sniffer lances for leak testing

The task

Leak testing is one of the last production steps of a battery pack. So-called sniffer lances must be precisely guided to specific positions for the gas check.

The challenge

The tube of the sniffer lance is very fine and sensitive. Targeted positioning of the robot is necessary to avoid damaging the lance.

Our solution

The VISOR® Robotic in the version with narrow field of view detects reference points such as screw heads or component edges whose contour can be taught and thus prevents damage to the fine sniffing lance. Furthermore, the contour detector offers the possibility of an easily parameterisable 3D offset function for the relative displacement of the robot tool in order to bring the sniffer lance to the correct measuring position. Due to the hand-eye calibration included in the sensor, it communicates directly in robot coordinates. The calibration can be carried out at any location and, via an integrated robot-camera data exchange, it is still possible to work within the robot's entire working area. Due to the high computing performance of the VISOR®, the position coordinates are available just a few milliseconds after image acquisition.
